Far Northern Region covers 269,224 square kilometres and stretches from Cardwell in the southeast to the Torres Strait Island communities in the north and the Gulf of Carpentaria in the west.
Far North Queensland covers a large geographical and economically diverse area. Significant industries include tourism, cattle grazing, agriculture and mining of both sand and bauxite. Agricultural product such as sugar cane, tropical fruits including bananas, mangoes, papaya, lychees and coffee are grown in Far Northern Queensland. The Region supports a large tourism industry and is considered a premier tourist destination in Australia. Nearly one third of international visitors to Queensland come to the Far North.
Fire and Rescue (F&R) provides Fire, Rescue, Hazmat, Community Safety and Special Operations capability to the entire Region. This capability is provided by 25 Fire Stations located throughout the Region. This comprises of 2 permanent, 4 composite and 19 auxiliary stations. The region is staffed by 135 full time employees and 317 auxiliary employees.
The Region also has 21 Local Government areas which are supported by the QFES Emergency Management staff in meeting their requirements under the Queensland Disaster Management arrangements. The Emergency Management team has a total of 5 staff who work very closely with all local governments and the wider QFES.
Rural Fire Service (RFS) regional operations is co-located with the F&R Far Northern Region but led by the RFS Assistant Commissioner. RFSQ FNR operates with 206 brigades, and is staffed by approximately 4,475 personnel, including regional QFES personnel, Volunteer Firefighters, and Volunteer Community Educators.
State Emergency Service (SES) regional operations is co-located with the F&R Far Northern Region but led by the SES Assistant Commissioner. SES FNR operates with 52 groups, and is staffed by approximately 1,143 personnel, including regional QFES personnel and volunteers.
Far Northern Fire Communications Centre is co-located with Queensland Ambulance Service in Anderson Street Cairns.
