Auxiliary firefighters are casual firefighters who respond when needed. They are integral members of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. They provide an efficient and effective service to Queensland communities in the preservation of life, property and the environment. Their duties include structural and environmental fires, motor vehicle entrapment, chemical spills, technical rescue, building compliance inspections and community education.

Auxiliary firefighters are integral members of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services working alongside full-time and volunteer firefighters in the provision of fire and rescue services to the communities of Queensland.

  • Be a minimum of 18 years old at commencement of paid employment.

  • Employer's written consent to attend incidents and emergencies (where applicable)

  • Live or work within a reasonable distance of the auxiliary fire station to ensure compliance with response time targets

  • Australian Resident Status

  • Manual 'C' class drivers licence


  • QFES expects all auxiliary firefighters will commit to the following throughout their employment:

  • 50% attendance at emergency incidents

  • 75% of Core Skills Training Package (CTSP) activities

  • Obtaining a Manual Medium Rigid (MR) drivers licence, at your own expense, within 12 months of employment

  • Participating in ongoing skills acquisition and maintenance programs, including first aid/emergency care

  • Complying with the QFES policies and procedures including workplace behaviour, code of conduct, safety and personal presentation standards

​Selection Process

As part of the recruitment and selection process, you will be required to undertake a number of assessments under the QFES selection criteria.

Auxiliary Recruit Training

All QFES auxiliary firefighters are required to undertake both Phases 1 and 2 of the Auxiliary Recruit Training and Education Program (ARTEP) to ensure they possess a minimum standard of core operational skills.

Additional training may also be required to be undertaken in accordance with Regional priorities and identified local risks. 

Auxiliary firefighters are expected to attend 75% of the regular Core Skills Training Package (CTSP) (an average of two hours per week as a minimum) in order to maintain their operational competencies.

Auxiliary Firefighter positions are limited and not available at all QFES station locations.
