Did you know?
The Queensland Government is delivering one of the most significant bodies of change to Queensland's disaster and emergency management system, ensuring we are best placed to continue delivering exceptional services to all Queenslanders.
Work is underway ahead of the 2024 natural disaster season, with the goal to modernise service delivery arrangements, simplify operational structures and focus resources.
As part of the reforms, the SES will join QPS and will receive an uplift in funding and resources to focus on supporting the frontline.

The Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) is built on the good will of thousands of members. They are:

  • People helping People

  • Mates helping Mates
  • Neighbours helping Neighbours

The Queensland SES is a “not-for-profit organisation” that shares its highly recognised name with the States and Territory SES organisations throughout Australia.  With approximately 5,100 active and unpaid members, the Queensland SES performs a diverse range of functions to respond to local, State and National disasters and emergencies.

SES assistance is provided for non-life threatening emergency situations during floods, storms or other similar events. SES also support other agencies such as Queensland Police Service and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service to perform additional functions and different types of disasters and emergencies such as:

  • Vertical Rescue

  • Flood Boat Rescue

  • Road Crash Rescue

  • Urban, Rural and Evacuation Searches

  • Emergency Traffic Management

  • Urban Search and Rescue

  • Agency Support

  • Incident Management

  • Community Education

The SES is designed to empower people to help themselves and others in their community in times of emergency and disaster.

SES members receive world class training providing them with real life skills which are used during emergencies, and knowledge that stays with them throughout their life. Our members are trained and equipped to help their communities across a range of functions, and their primary purpose is to assist the most vulnerable members of the community.

SES members work together with a great group of like–minded people. They train and respond to emergencies together, and the experiences they share lay the foundations for life-long friendships.

The SES has a role for people with a broad range of talents and expertise. A level of physical fitness is needed especially when involved in rescues, responding to natural disasters and performing other critical roles. View our Careers and Volunteering pages to find out more about the roles within SES and express your interest to become a member.

We are in this together so remember during emergencies, particularly flood and storm related events, there can be delays of hours or days. Be patient, stay calm, and remember the SES personnel responding may also be personally affected by the conditions in your local area.
